About Capt. Steve Thomas
Capt. Steve has been fly fishing since he was a youngster growing up in North Carolina. His uncle gave him an old fly rod and introduced him to fishing for bass/bream in the farm ponds nearby. He has fly fished in Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Labrador, the Caribbean, most of the western and south eastern states. After early retirement he worked as a fishing guide in Alaska for 5 years teaching clients how to fly fish for salmon, trout, grayling and char at 2 different lodges. Having been employed by Hobcaw Barony for the last several years Capt. Steve developed the first ever fly fishing program at the Barony.
Capt. Steve works hard to put his clients on "tailing redfish" so they can enjoy one of the greatest thrills of fly fishing. This is as much like hunting as it is like fishing as we wade the flats looking for feeding fish that will either be "tail up" or "cruising" the shallow waters in search of fleeing crabs, shrimp or baitfish.
The "Barony" at Hobcaw is a 17,000 reserve that is truly unique environmental area used by universities from around the U.S. to do research in many unique ecological studies. Capt. Steve is the only guide with private access to the "gated" property and allowed to take you fly fishing. This will be a truly be an experience that any fly fisherman will cherish!
